Depression and Resistance Training
Resistance Training For Depression
Through working as an online personal trainer, it’s clear to see the changes which occur in clients. However, it always seems that it’s not just the body which is transformed in the process, but also the mind. Of course, clients are much happier with their bodies at the other end of a personal training course, but new research suggests it’s more than this which makes weight-training a great tool for battling mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
A new study from researchers at the University of Limerick has found that there is a profound effect on those suffering from symptoms of depression when under-going a strength training programme. Looking at 1,877 participants who had symptoms ranging from thoughts of worthlessness to a lack of morale, researchers found a link to improvements of these baser moods, no matter what your age or gender, according to Moneyish.
While the endorphins released during exercise are a surefire way to feel better, strength-training, in particular, is great for being able to motivate yourself with visible, measurable goals. The study didn’t specify exercises, but the head researcher of the study said that at least two days a week is a good place to start.
Of course, exercise won’t be the solution to all mental health needs, but for those who find the idea of a gym scary, and want a lower impact way to engage with a personal trainer and build their confidence using equipment correctly and safely, and online personal training course can feel like a safe, rewarding way to approach it.
