When performing press ups, try pulling in on the ground, imagine that you’re doing your press ups on a loose carpet and you want to make a crease between your hand position. You don’t want to move your hands across the ground, just provide more pressure to the ground and activate your chest by pulling in. 

This will pump blood to the chest and provide more tension through the entire exercise, this is particularly important on the way down (eccentric part of the exercise).
