Registered dietician and Medical Nutrition Manager for Abbot Imogen Watson recently told Net Doctor the key to improving overall health is to focus on muscle mass.
She stated that strengthening muscle is important as we age because we naturally lose muscle the older we get.
“Our muscles play a vital role in our health at all stages of life, from allowing movement and balance to contributing to physical strength, organ function, skin integrity, immunity and wound healing,” Ms Watson noted.
What’s more, not having enough muscle can lead to a higher risk of fractures and longer recovery times as we get older.
The nutrition expert, who recommended eating protein-rich meals twice a day to help build and restore muscles, was commenting following the release of a study by Annals of Medicine.
This reported the importance of muscle mass in overall health, saying it can affect energy, mobility and strength levels.
According to the findings: “Low muscle mass is associated with several negative outcomes across the healthcare continuum.”
