How to Become a Certified Nutritionist

Become a Certified Nutritionist: Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Nutrition Science.

I recently achieved something I'm pretty proud of – a Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Nutrition Science! Truthfully, I passed a few months ago but wanted to wait until I physically received my diploma before sharing it. After all, having it in hand makes it feel genuinely official! Now, I typically prefer creating educational content rather than talking about myself, but I thought this achievement deserved a quick mention because it can hopefully inspire or guide you in your own journey.

What Does a Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Nutrition Science Entail?

The course I did at MNU lasted an intense 13 months – intense mainly because, like most people, I don't exactly have endless free hours to dedicate to studying. But, despite time constraints, I managed it and, quite honestly, learnt far more than I anticipated. Even with over a decade of experience as a Nutrition Coach, this course revealed significant gaps in my knowledge. It's true what they say – you don’t know what you don’t know!

The course curriculum included:

  • Evidence-Based Learning – Understanding and critically reviewing nutrition research.

  • Fundamentals of Nutrition – Core nutritional principles and their practical applications.

  • Advanced Nutrition Theory – Deep dives into complex nutritional concepts and strategies.

  • Practical Nutrition Support – Real-world applications and providing tailored client support.

  • Nutritional Considerations for Clinical Populations – Specialised knowledge for supporting clinical health issues as part.

  • Performance Nutrition Programming – Enhancing athletic performance through optimised nutrition.

One surprising revelation for me was the vast range of supplements and techniques I hadn't explored before. Did you know baking soda can actually act as an ergogenic aid by buffering lactic acid, delaying fatigue, and enhancing endurance in high-intensity exercise? I certainly didn't – but that’s just one example of how comprehensive this course was.

How Does Becoming a Certified Nutritionist Impact Clients?

If you're currently working with me or considering doing so, you might wonder how my new qualification impacts you. Firstly, I was already a Certified Nutritionist, so my fundamental ability to offer guidance remains unchanged. However, behind-the-scenes, there's a significant improvement in the quality and depth of the nutritional support I provide.

This includes:

  • Enhanced methods for calculating more precise Calorie and macronutrient targets.

  • Improved client progress monitoring techniques.

  • Greater insight and expertise when creating personalised nutrition plans and meal plans.

You’ll likely notice the improvement in the nutrition content I share online too. I strive to deliver great content already, but as a wise mentor once told me, "better is always better."

  2. Plan Your Study Schedule – Realistically assess how much time you can dedicate weekly to studying.

  3. Stay Curious – Always keep learning. Even after years of experience, there's always something new to discover.

Personally, I went with MNU, and after doing two other nutrition courses, I can say with experience that they are the best. If you’re interested, you can check out their content overview here.
