Fundamentals of training, nutrition, & mindset
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be releasing a series of relatively short videos and articles covering the fundamentals of training, nutrition, and mindset. The aim is simple: to help you understand what truly matters when it comes to improving body composition and supporting long-term health, so you know exactly where to direct your efforts.
Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy!
Today, as an intro to this video series, I want to start by stating the obvious: nothing worth having comes easy. If you want to transform your body at a rate that’s exciting and motivating, you will need to work hard. There is, of course, a balance to be struck between discipline and downtime, but in the early stages it’s advantageous to commit fully. Go hard! Doing so achieves three things: it demonstrates just how effective consistent effort can be, it builds confidence through tangible results, and it creates a sense of momentum that encourages you to continue – whether that progress shows up in strength and performance, body composition and scale weight, energy levels and mood, or in all areas, seeing progress is incredibly motivating!
Maintaining Momentum
Once that momentum is in place, continuing becomes far easier. Progress breeds motivation, and motivation reinforces progress. By contrast, few things are more disheartening than the absence of results – so it’s well worth leaning into the process early on.
What Hard Work Looks Like
That said, “hard work” is often misunderstood. Many imagine dramatic early mornings or cinematic training sessions – something akin to a Rocky-style montage. Screaming Drago at the top of a mountain. While those moments have their place, they represent only a small portion of the equation. Really, where a bit of Hearts on Fire by John Cafferty is needed is when you’re prepping your food, acknowledging cravings without immediately acting on them, and going out for a walk to help get your steps in. It’s easy enough to focus for a 45-minute session; the greater challenge – and the greater opportunity – lies in everything that happens outside of it.
Why Online Coaching is so Effective
This is precisely why online coaching can be so effective. Unlike a single class or a one-to-one session, it allows for a more comprehensive approach – looking at the full picture, refining each variable, and ensuring nothing important is overlooked. That said, my role is to guide, support, and provide a clear route towards your goal. You, however, are the one in control – the one steering. I can create a map, point out the most efficient path, help you avoid a few unnecessary detours and even show when you can put your foot down, but the onus for action still rests with you, both inside and outside the gym.
Key Takeaways
Embrace the idea of making meaningful progress. With the right structure and the right mindset, you may find you’re capable of far more than you initially expected.
